Wheeling was named by the early explorers as the "Place of the Skull, in theory because the local native tribes did not take well to the visitors and placed the skulls of the unwelcome settlers on a stake at the mouth of Wheeling Creek.

Enjoy a scenic walk or Bike Ride down the 13 mile Heritage Riverfront Walk- walk past the scattered remains of Fort Henry, the site of the last battle of the Revolutionary War. Further down the trail to the South, walk past the area where the French explorers buried a plaque claiming the area as their own(to this day it has never been found).
Just a few blocks and a lovely walk from the hotel is historic North Wheeling Historical District, with its "painted ladies" Victorian Homes, tea shops, galleries, and cafe's. We are just 11 miles from the Former West Virginia State Penitentiary at Moundsville. The old prison, the site of riots, murder and insanity with one of it most infamous guests, Charles Manson. The Prison reputably is said to be haunted and has been seen on "America's Scariest Places". The Prison offers daily 90 minute tours through the "Very Haunted" old prison(Closed Dec1-April). After the Prison tour directly across the street is the Grave Creek Mound Archaeology Complex, The heart of the site is probably the most famous and certainly the largest of the Adena Burial mounds. A massive undertaking, the total effort required the movement of more than 60,000 tons of earth. Artifacts and exhibits interpreting the lifestyle of the Adena people are displayed in the Delf Norona Museum, adjacent to the 2,000 year old mound.
For the Antique collector at heart head over to the Fostoria Glass Museum for a cherished look at the glassware that made Fostoria Famous. For Memories of your childhood head to the Marx Toy Museum, Marx Toys was located in Glen Dale, West Virginia from 1918-1980.
