Wheeling, West Virginia & surrounding communities have many wonderful attractions. If History is your thing, the Wheeling area abounds with History and Historical sites. Wheeling was named by the early explorers as the "Place of the Skull, in theory because the local native tribes did not take well to the visitors and placed the skulls of the unwelcome settlers on a stake at the mouth of Wheeling Creek.

The Wheeling Inn is located directly next to a National Landmark, The Wheeling Suspension Bridge.

Enjoy a scenic walk or Bike Ride down the 13 mile Heritage Riverfront Trail- walk past the scattered remains of Fort Henry, the site of the last battle of the Revolutionary War. Further down the trail to the South, walk past the area where the French explorers buried a plaque claiming the area as their own(to this day it has never been found).

Just a few blocks and a lovely walk from the hotel is historic North Wheeling Historical District, with its "painted ladies" Victorian Homes, tea shops, galleries, and cafe's. Some of the leaders of industry lived along the Ohio River and built mansions to celebrate that wealth. Enjoy Uncle Pete's for wonderful food and Riverside dining on their deck during summer months.

For the History Buffs here is a must see, if you have read any of the old Zane Gray books about McCullough's Leap.  And the Battle of Fort Henry, where Betty Zane makes her  famous run to the powder house. The Wheeling Inn is just about on top of where Fort Henry Stood.Just take a left at the hotel, head up old Rt 40 and you will see the spot Where the General while being chased by the local Indians lept off the hill with his horse and lived to tell the tale
